There are some problems that may develop with hemorrhoids that may be more painful and cause more problems than just your run of the mill hemorrhoid might cause. Thrombosed hemorrhoids are hemorrhoids that have a blood clot trapped in them. They are much more painful and much more serious than a mild hemorrhoid would be.
Simple hemorrhoid treatments might help you get through the day, at first. But if you think you might have a hemorrhoid that has thrombosed, you need to seek medical help as soon as possible. Getting help sooner, rather than later, will help you avoid the possibly life threatening scenario that an infected hemorrhoid might bring you.
There are many ways to treat hemorrhoids. Some of them may be recommended by your doctor to try before taking a more drastic route. Usually, though, with hemorrhoids that have become thrombosed, there is an urgency to take care of the problem right away. If there is a clot that is blocking the passage of stool, or if the clot has been there for a few days already, immediate action may be required. Preparation for any of the surgical procedures may include an enema.
Treatments
If you have a thrombosed hemorrhoid, you may require immediate surgery for it. One procedure that is done with this type of hemorrhoid is to open it, and squeeze out the blood and liquid inside. This procedure has a moderate success rate. Some people do experience a recurrence of the problem, and develop another clot. Though this pain is less invasive and easier to do than removing the hemorrhoid completely, it may not be the best treatment for everyone.
Another procedure that is considered traditional hemorrhoid surgery, called hemorrhoidectomy, is also a consideration for thrombosed hemorrhoids. In this type of surgery, the hemorrhoid is removed completely. It is very rare for the patient to have the problem again in the same area. The recovery period may include taking pain medication, having a little bleeding, especially when having a bowel movement, and having the need to use a stool softener to help pass the stools until healing is complete.
After you have hemorrhoid surgery, you will need to keep yourself comfortable. You can take sitz baths (warm water bath in shallow water for about 20 minutes) a couple of times a day to help heal and soothe the area. You will need to make sure you are drinking enough water. It is recommended that you drink at least six glasses of water daily. This will help keep your stools soft and help keep you regular.
Though thrombosed hemorrhoids can be painful and scary, taking care of them immediately will give you the best chances of recovering quickly and not having even more severe problems.
