The Difference Between Internal and External Hemorrhoids

Just hearing the word “hemorrhoids” is enough to make most people shy away from the conversation, which may be why the majority of people don’t realize that there is more than one type of hemorrhoid. They automatically assume that external hemorrhoids are the only type that exist, not knowing that you can get hemorrhoids on the inside of your anus as well as on the outside, and while both may have similar symptoms, and you can have both conditions at once, both can have different conditions as well.

External Hemorrhoids

External hemorrhoids are not only easier to diagnose than internal hemorrhoids, but are also easier to find hemorrhoid treatment for. External hemorrhoids reside on the outside of the anus, around the anus itself in the soft tissue. It occurs when the soft tissue gets filled with blood due to the vessels in the tissue, causing the bumps, or hemorrhoids, to occur.

There are many different symptoms of external hemorrhoids, including finding bright red blood spots on your toilet paper and feeling pain when you sit down. You may find that your anus itches and that it is raw when you are wiping after a bowel movement.

Internal Hemorrhoids

Internal hemorrhoids may also cause red blood to appear on the toilet paper when you’re wiping, but you may also find red blood on the stool. This is often cause for alarm, but is, the majority of the time, due to internal hemorrhoids. You may also have an itching in the anus area, and can also have what many sufferers call a “throbbing ache” in the anus area.

Treatment

Treatment for both internal and external hemorrhoids differ. Hemorrhoid treatment for someone who has external hemorrhoids can often be something a simple as taking sitz baths and using medicated creams or pads on the affected area. The hemorrhoids will often disappear on their own after a few weeks.

If you have internal hemorrhoids, however, your options change, as there aren’t any creams on the market that can help you to cure internal hemorrhoids. If you feel that you have internal hemorrhoids, it is a good idea to speak with your physician. If the hemorrhoids are allowed to grow large enough, they could prolapsed, or peek through the anus, causing a great deal of pain. In order to get rid of large hemorrhoids that are inside the anus, you will most likely have to undergo some sort of surgical hemorrhoid treatment.

If you have hemorrhoids, and aren’t sure if you have internal or external hemorrhoids, it is a good idea to speak with your doctor. Your physician will be able to give you the best treatment option for your condition.
