There are so many different conditions that you may, or man not, have, that it’s easy to see why most people don’t call their physician about the minor stuff. After all, how serious can hemorrhoids be when compared to someone who is having a heart attack or worse? While hemorrhoids aren’t something that is often life threatening (there are occasional cases, however, where hemorrhoids have caused a serious, life threatening condition) it is good to know when you should look for hemorrhoid treatment options on your own, and when you should visit the doctor to talk about your condition.
How Severe Is The Pain?
One of the first things to check is how severe the pain is. Your body has pain indicators to let you know that something is wrong. If you ignore these pain indicators, the pain get worse, and still worse, until you’re finally being driven half crazy with the amount of pain that you’re suffering from. If you are in only a tiny amount of pain, you may be able to treat yourself at home with sitz baths and cold compresses that are applied directly to the area.
If, however, you’re in an extreme amount of pain, so much so that you’re having a hard time getting any of your normal routine done, you should likely speak with your doctor.
Hemorrhoids can be minor, but they can also be serious as well, and a prolapsed hemorrhoid can be extremely painful to have to deal with and may require surgical intervention as a hemorrhoid treatment.
How Big?
If you have external hemorrhoids, you can likely feel them when you palpate the area with your fingers. If the hemorrhoids are small and are right around the rim of the anus, you most likely can treat yourself using an over the counter cream or gel. If, however, the hemorrhoids are large or you can feel that they are actually internal hemorrhoids that have prolapsed, seek out a physician immediately. Over the counter treatments won’t cure hemorrhoids when you’re dealing with serious ones, making it necessary to seek out your doctors advice.
Bleeding
Some hemorrhoids bleed. If you wipe yourself and notice that there is bright red blood on the toilet paper, this may be due to the hemorrhoids bleeding. There are, however, many other conditions which can cause bleeding to come out of the anus, making it a very good idea to speak with your doctor whenever you are bleeding from the anus, as it could be hemorrhoids requiring hemorrhoid treatment, or it could be something that is far more serious.
The bottom line? If you’re unsure as to what is wrong, always speak with your doctor.
